Q&A with Rik

What do you get passionate about?
Life. I love life. There’s so much to be passionate about. Making the most of everything that comes my way makes life a sweeter experience for sure. We learn & grow.

What are your life affirmations?
See the positive in the light and not the negative in the dark.
It’s not how much you do, but how much love you put into the doing.
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Write a positive phrase and smiley face in the mirror after you’ve showered.
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
Dance and sing your heart out, feel the music from within.
Chase the dream, not the competition. And Dream big.
Tae Kwon-Do tenets:
Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit.

Who would you change lives with if you could….?
Lewis Hamilton. What a dream lifestyle. To travel around the world’s finest locations racing at 220mph, in the McLaren Mercedes, cutting it with the best. A world champion at 22. Very inspiring. Formula 1 is a very fast, theatrical and colourful world.

What is your most embarrassing acting moment?
9 years old, in my first ever stage play as Badger in “The Fantastic Mr Fox” and I fell off the stage!! We had these special paper masks that weren’t so easy to see through! Fell flat on my face…! What a way to start my career. Hey… the only way was up right?! Ha ha…

What’s your favourite style of acting?
I enjoy working on screen & on stage; there are so many positives to both, each discipline requiring a different preparation and style. Secretly though, if I’m honest, I do relish the challenge of playing Shakespeare and classical texts. I think it is a real skill to deliver heightened poetic vocabulary as if it’s colloquial conversation. The beauty in Shakespeare’s words inspire me deep within.

Going forward, what’s the plan?
To constantly give my full to whatever project I’m blessed to be working on, to continue in my growth as a person and as an actor. To be working on fantastic projects with the worlds finest actors, producers and directors. To continue ‘telling the story’ for the audience. To travel. To be happy. To love.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
That “Vulnerability can be our greatest asset”. A few years ago, I was working with a specialist vocal coach and remember going through a massive soul search during the process. Needing more confidence in my ability, this coach helped me understand that our natural temptation to guard/protect ourselves has no liberating powers at all.

Living and shrinking in this fear, viewing the world through a closed window, many wonderful and exciting opportunities will go by unseen. However, if you lower the guard, allowing yourself to be more vulnerable and open… Gosh, who knows what you might see/find out there?! The perspective will be greater, that’s for sure! Ok, you may receive a bump or two in the process, but eventually with faith, you gain the foresight and ability to avoid unwanted challenges, yet remain open to all of life’s possibilities and experiences. A liberating outlook, I think.

Yikes… that was a little deep, huh…? Promise not to do that again… ha ha…

What do you consider to be your greatest achievements thus far?
Winning the Laurence Olivier Bursary in 2004. What an honour.
Gaining my black belt status in Tae Kwon-Do and competing at a top level.
Working successfully in the acting industry and playing such wonderful characters.

Which famous person dead or alive would you like to have around for dinner?
Probably Will Smith. I love everything this man stands for; his endless energy, humour and commitment to being the best he can be in whatever he chooses, for himself, his family and for the world. Quite a role model I think. Don’t know what we would eat though!

Describe your idea of a fun evening?
Groooovin’ on down with those that are closest to me… 1st on the dancefloor, last one off! Cue James Brown…. "Huh!! Get up Offa that thing, dance until you feel better…." ha ha…
